Enjoy what you do and it won’t feel like work. Simple words that for so many working years I didn’t understand. I was too busy trying to follow a path I thought I needed to follow instead of doing what makes me want to do and learn more. Now I can’t wait to research where I’ll be driving to. Will it be garage sales? Thrift shops? Auctions? In the neighborhood or day trip? How will I know what to look for?
I thrift for multiple platforms so finding items I think will sell has opened my eyes. I see an abundance of items all around me. New with tag items that are never used for one reason or another. High end, tailor made, designer items that may have only been worn a few times and forgotten about. I would never have been able to afford some of these items full retail but running across them at a small fraction of the cost brings a smile to my face. I have to admit I want to keep more than I should but then I remember my job is to bring these items to others so they can also share in the value. This weekend I found a pair of beautiful Manolo Blahnik shoes that I never would have thought I’d come across and be able to purchase. I came across them while thrifting and couldn’t believe my luck. I also found designer bedding and other items that really brought a smile to my face and made my day. I know the person that buys these from me will be very happy with each item and I will have been the one to make that happen. I get to buy these. I get to write about it. I get to share with a wider scope of buyers that just 10 years ago wouldn’t have been as possible. There are more people, more platforms and more choices to find your niche. This job seems easy to outsiders unfamiliar with what we do but the ability to research and use mistakes as learning experiences to grow from will be what sets you apart.
