It’s ok to start small but dream big. I’m sometimes afraid to take that leap unless I know I’ll have a safe landing on the other side. That feeling is both a blessing and a curse. I want to be that person that can feel confidence in my actions more often. Most sourcing days I’ll only allow myself a small amount to spend to keep my expenses in check. One of the early pitfalls resellers can fall into is buying too much too soon. Whether you are just starting or have been doing this a while, most seasoned entrepreneurs will tell you to plan and stick to a budget.
I’ve learned to set aside a little extra each month for those splurge days so that I can expand my business and buy items that may initially cost more but the return can be greater. It’s a gamble, I know, but I’m learning to trust myself more. I’ve been sourcing and researching for a few years now and while I’m by no means an expert, I do feel if something gives you that thought in your head that says “get it!” you should do it.
I love finding items that are one-offs or hard to find. Good quality items will not go out of style. Good craftsmanship is appreciated. Go out and explore the garage sales and estates sales and thrift stores and other avenues of sourcing. Today one of my favorite thrift stores had an amazing sale going on and I was able to bring home a larger lot of items for both my stores. I was happy I had set aside the extra money and was able to buy the things I wanted and not just wished I could get. It was a little overwhelming when I saw the receipt and loaded the large pile of good into my car but it also felt good. Some sourcing days like this help me grow in confidence. I can feel a little bit of the old timid me being chipped away and in its place is the person I want to be. I’ve learned to appreciate life lessons that in my younger years would have been totally ignored whether from fear of failure or fear of other people’s reactions. I know I have so much more to grow but I like the direction I’m heading. I am in control. I decide where I go, what I buy and when I sell. I’m ready to take more steps into the unknown and if I fail, I’ll pick myself up and learn what to do next time. But when I make that big sale, that feeling is incredible. Today was a good day! Now time to list….
